Pool cage screen mesh inspection is a visual check for tears, edge gaps and visible wear; it is not a structural certification.

What a mesh check can reveal
Phifer recommends looking for holes, rips, warping and dirt buildup when checking screens. An accessible visual check helps describe the condition of the fabric and its perimeter. It cannot establish hidden connection strength or the enclosure’s wind performance. See Phifer screen inspection and home maintenance guidance.
Inspect the center and perimeter separately
A center tear differs from a gap where fabric has come out of its groove. Note whether the retaining spline is visible, whether the opening is localized and whether nearby framing looks displaced. Do not pull the mesh to test its remaining strength.
Record changes rather than guess an age
Photograph the full wall opening and a safe close view of the damaged area. Record when it was first noticed and whether several panels show the same pattern. Appearance alone does not establish the mesh installation date or product model.
When the repair scope expands
Several damaged panels may justify discussing a broader rescreen, while an isolated hole may be assessed on its own. Bent framing, moving connections or an apparently unstable enclosure require separate professional attention, not simply replacement fabric.
Safe assessment before repair
Take ground-level photos of the complete opening and its affected edge, and describe whether the condition is new or recurring. Avoid pushing on mesh or loading the aluminum frame to test it. Never walk on screened roofs. Screen work does not certify structural capacity, and a door forming part of a required pool barrier needs its safety functions reviewed separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does a visual screen check confirm a wind rating?
No. Fabric condition and structural capacity are different questions.
Should I inspect only the middle of the mesh?
No. Edge retention and gaps at the frame also matter.
Can a photo identify the exact screen product?
Not reliably. Product records or inspection may be needed.
