Screen Edge Pullout: Definition and Homeowner Guide

Pool cage screen edge pullout occurs when fabric releases from part of its retaining perimeter, leaving a gap at the frame.

An edge problem is not always a fabric tear

Phifer’s installation instructions illustrate screening secured in a groove with spline. If that perimeter releases, a gap can appear even where the central fabric is intact. Identify where the screen exits the frame before deciding which part needs repair. See Phifer screen installation instructions.

Conditions to investigate

Mesh wear, damaged spline, incompatible fit, frame-groove damage and previous installation can be relevant. A loose edge alone does not prove one cause. Note whether fabric is torn at the perimeter and whether the spline has moved or fallen out.

Refitting versus replacing fabric

An intact compatible assembly may be evaluated for refitting, but damaged fabric or a defective groove changes the decision. Repeatedly pushing the same edge back into place without checking fit can leave a recurring opening for insects.

Avoid over-pulling the panel

Pulling harder is not a universal correction. The mesh, retaining system and aluminum opening need to work together without distortion. Discuss nearby loose panels if more than one edge releases, rather than treating every opening as an unrelated defect.

Safe assessment before repair

Take ground-level photos of the complete opening and its affected edge, and describe whether the condition is new or recurring. Avoid pushing on mesh or loading the aluminum frame to test it. Never walk on screened roofs. Screen work does not certify structural capacity, and a door forming part of a required pool barrier needs its safety functions reviewed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can pullout happen without a hole in the center?

Yes. The retaining edge may release while the middle remains intact.

Is putting the same spline back always enough?

No. Check fabric, spline fit and groove condition first.

Should adhesive replace the retaining system?

Do not substitute adhesive without applicable product guidance and assessment of the frame.
