A door-mounted device that returns a hinged screen door toward its closed position and controls closing movement.

Closer, hinge and latch have different jobs
A closer controls the door’s return movement. Hinges support and pivot the door; the latch holds it closed. A closer cannot correct every problem in the hinges, jamb or latch. Identify which part is failing before replacing hardware.
Door slamming or slow return
A slamming door, a door that stops short or a leaking closer warrants inspection. These observations are symptoms rather than a diagnosis. Misalignment, rubbing, loose brackets or damaged hardware can affect closing behavior.
Installation compatibility
Select a closer intended for the door and mounting arrangement. Bracket positions, adjustment instructions and suitable fasteners are product-specific. Do not assume an existing hole pattern is correct for a replacement model.
Adjustment is not alignment repair
Follow the closer manufacturer’s instructions if adjustment is appropriate. If the door rubs, sags or requires force to latch, inspect its hinges and frame as well. An adjustment screw is not a repair for distorted framing or loose attachment.
Routine checks from the ground
Watch the door close without placing fingers near hinges or brackets. Note loose screws, unusual movement or a closer rod that appears bent. Do not use a closer as a door stop or hang objects from its body.
Safety limits
A working closer does not establish compliance with pool-barrier requirements. Where the door forms part of a required barrier, applicable self-closing and self-latching requirements need separate review. Do not disable a safety function to solve nuisance slamming.

Frequently asked questions
Does a closer replace the latch?
No. The closer returns the door; the latch holds it closed.
Can a closer fix a bent screen door?
No. Door alignment, frame condition and hardware attachments should be checked separately.
Does installing a closer prove pool-barrier compliance?
No. The applicable barrier requirements and the complete door assembly must be checked.
