Lanai screening infill is the screen fabric fitted between existing boundary members of a covered outdoor opening.

Infill is not the supporting roof
Phifer’s screen installation instructions concern fitting fabric into a compatible frame. In a covered lanai, screen infill occupies an opening but does not by itself provide a roof or verify the existing supports. Separate screening from construction of a new structure. See Phifer screen installation instructions.
Existing openings need assessment
Review the opening boundaries, frame condition, door access and retaining arrangement before adding mesh. An existing patio roof or slab is not proof that every attachment is suitable. Product fit and project-specific support questions need to be resolved first.
Screen versus solid panels
Mesh, solid kickplates and glass are not interchangeable infill choices. Changing porosity, weight or water entry may change design assumptions. Discuss the proposed material and any required approvals rather than treating all enclosure finishes as screen work.
Drainage remains part of planning
Rain can pass through insect screening. Preserve existing water paths, door transitions and access to attachments when planning infill. Covering a gap with sealant or a solid strip without evaluating its purpose can obstruct drainage rather than improve the lanai.
Safe assessment before repair
Take ground-level photos of the complete opening and its affected edge, and describe whether the condition is new or recurring. Avoid pushing on mesh or loading the aluminum frame to test it. Never walk on screened roofs. Screen work does not certify structural capacity, and a door forming part of a required pool barrier needs its safety functions reviewed separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does screen infill create a waterproof room?
No. Ordinary insect mesh permits air and rain to pass.
Does existing roof coverage prove attachment suitability?
No. The actual supporting construction and proposed connections need review.
Are mesh and solid panels equivalent?
No. Their weight, porosity and design implications differ.
